Certified workshop on humane education

Through LivingKind, FePA offers the humane education workshop that trains teachers across the island. The methodology has been validated internationally and adapted to the Puerto Rican context, making it possible to build respect for animals into the public school system from an early age.

LivingKind

Raising defenders from the classroom

FePA sponsors elementary-school students in a program that prepares them as the next generation of animal-welfare defenders in Puerto Rico. The program combines education, community leadership, and direct action to create real grassroots change, and is led by the teacher in charge, Meliana Canino, who also serves as FePA’s secretary. Rooms To Go sponsored the construction of a space where students care for the animals they rescue.

The Roots

Humane education in schools: a six-year alliance

Teachers from all seven educational regions of the Department of Education took part in FePA’s Humane Education training, held from October 31 to November 14, 2025. The workshop, led by Bob Schwalb of the US organization LivingKind, offered hands-on activities on empathy and compassion for animals, the environment, and social justice. Participants committed to adopting at least one humane practice in their classrooms. The next session will take place on January 25 and 27, 2027.
